B1 Statistical, stochastic and related methods
In many areas one need to consider large numbers of degrees of freedom.
Examples are the discretization of space volume in cells in climate research, the approximation of space-time fields by fields living on lattices in elementary particle theory, or the consideration of many molecules (or stars) and their interaction. Changing the quantity of such objects also often changes the quality. For instance, large quantities of simple water molecules show stunning effects like phase transitions. Such system are studies with stochastic and statistical methods, utilizing pseudo random processes. High numbers of coupled differential equations or integrals of very high dimensions can be solved with these tools.
